What does the pulmonologist do?

They study respiratory function, interpret imaging and lung-air studies, and follow up on diseases that make it difficult to breathe normally.

Conditions treated

Common in their practice are asthma, COPD, and chronic bronchitis, in addition to sleep apnea, bronchiectasis, pleural effusion, and pulmonary fibrosis. They also take part in assessing lung findings that may point toward lung cancer, in coordination with other specialties.

When to see one?

• Persistent cough or difficulty breathing.
• Wheezing in the chest or shortness of breath on exertion.
• Loud snoring with pauses or daytime sleepiness.
