It is worth knowing about ABO incompatibility because it can affect the newborn: it occurs when the mother's blood type and the baby's are different, and the maternal antibodies can act on the baby's red blood cells.

How it presents: the most common consequence is jaundice, that is, a yellowish coloring of the skin and eyes in the first days, which is sometimes accompanied by mild anemia.

When is it monitored? It is usually detected at birth or shortly after, especially when the mother is type O and the baby is of another type; for this reason the newborn's coloring is monitored.

Which specialists take part? The neonatologist and the pediatrician follow up on the baby, and the hematologist contributes expertise in blood-related matters. If your baby shows marked jaundice, do not delay a check-up with one of these professionals.
