What a dialysis unit is
Haemodialysis filters the blood when the kidneys can no longer do it. A dialysis unit is a room with dialysis machines, water treatment and specialist nursing staff, where each patient occupies a chair for several hours per session, usually three times a week. Because of that frequency, the distance between the unit and the patient's home stops being a logistical detail and becomes part of the treatment: it amounts to hundreds of journeys a year.
What to ask when choosing a unit
Ask about the shifts available — a unit at capacity will only offer overnight slots — about who places and follows up the vascular access, about what happens if the patient needs to be admitted during treatment, and whether the unit sits inside a hospital or operates independently. If a public institution or an insurer covers the treatment, confirm in advance what is included: the sessions, the disposable materials and the medication are often billed separately.
