When to see a physiotherapist
Physiotherapy is used after an injury or an operation, for persistent back, neck or joint pain, and to recover movement after a long period of rest. Many people arrive on the referral of an orthopaedist or a rehabilitation doctor, though it is also common to go directly with a complaint that will not settle. If pain appeared suddenly after a heavy impact, a medical assessment comes first.
What the first session looks like
The first appointment is usually assessment rather than treatment: the physiotherapist looks at how you move, what hurts and through what range, and from that proposes a plan with an approximate number of sessions. Ask how many are expected and how progress will be measured — a plan with no discharge criterion is hard to judge. Most of the progress comes from the exercises done between sessions.
