A paediatrician follows a child's growth from birth through adolescence: routine check-ups, the vaccination schedule, feeding, development and the common illnesses of childhood. Well-child visits matter even when nothing is wrong, because that is where deviations in growth or development are caught early. In Mexico the vaccination record lives in the Cartilla Nacional de Salud, which is worth bringing to every visit.
When not to wait for an appointment
Some signs do not allow waiting and belong in an emergency department rather than a booked visit: difficulty breathing, marked listlessness or difficulty waking the child, fever in a baby under three months, dehydration with no urine for many hours, or a seizure. With any of these, same-day care is the right call.
