Psychologist, psychiatrist, and the difference
A psychologist works through therapy; a psychiatrist is a physician and can also prescribe medication. Many people see both, and there is no single rule about where to start: it depends on what is happening and on the judgement of whoever sees you. When looking, ask about the professional licence and about the approach used, because the word therapy covers practices that differ a great deal from one another.
If you are in crisis, a directory is not the place
A list of practices is no use during a crisis. In Mexico, Línea de la Vida answers free and confidentially, 24 hours a day, on 800 911 2000, staffed by mental health professionals. If there is immediate risk to anyone's life, the number is 911. Looking for a practice and booking an appointment makes sense afterwards, not during.
What the first sessions look like
Early appointments usually go on understanding what brought you and agreeing where the work is heading. It is reasonable to ask how often sessions will be, how progress will be reviewed and what each one costs. It is also legitimate to change therapist if after several sessions there is no working rapport: that is common and does not mean therapy is not working.
