In recent years my professional interests in medicine have focused on comprehensive health care for adults and older people in the outpatient setting, including health promotion, disease prevention, injury and disability prevention, optimizing functional capacity, and improving quality of life for people with health problems such as chronic multimorbidity, that is, people who have several conditions at once, and who are seen by many specialist physicians who sometimes prescribe treatments that are complex to follow or even contradictory; with potentially inappropriate polypharmacy, using multiple medications with a high risk of interactions and adverse effects that, instead of benefiting, cause harm to those who use them; with problems of poor physical condition, associated with illness, sedentary lifestyle, and physical inactivity; with nutritional problems, related to other illnesses and to improper diet; with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, sleep disorders, among others; with a high risk of bone fractures, due to osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency, impaired body balance, use of sedative or other medications; who have recently been discharged from the hospital without having fully recovered or with complications derived from hospitalization; who suffer from progressive and incurable illnesses that cause distressing symptoms, such as pain, shortness of breath, depression, mental confusion, agitation, anguish, depression, among others, or who are at the end of life. For more than 20 years I have participated in activities related to health care, in different settings such as clinical records, clinical laboratory, medical brigades, hospitals, emergency services, clinical research, epidemiological studies, home medical care, medical services in residences for older people, advisory work in day centers, and education of health personnel on health care and social assistance for older people.
