Dr. Juan Antonio Villanueva Herrero

About the Doctor

Dr. Villanueva is a certified colorectal surgeon, graduate of the Facultad de Medicina of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. Trained in general surgery at the Hospital Juarez de Mexico and in colorectal surgery at the Hospital General de Mexico. He was invited to join as a staff physician of the Colorectal Surgery Service upon completing his training. Since 2014 he has organized the current Anorectal Physiology Unit of the Colorectal Surgery Service, which offers a diploma endorsed by UNAM. They perform 1,000 studies per year of ultrasound and anorectal manometry, in addition to specialized surgery for fecal incontinence and pelvic floor diseases. In 2014 he completed his master's degree in health sciences at the Instituto Politecnico Nacional. Dr. Villanueva has served for ten years as a guest and adjunct professor of the Colorectal Surgery specialty; he has advised more than 70 theses. His clinical interests include the use and application of anorectal physiology tests, fecal incontinence, pelvic floor diseases, transanal resection of rectal tumors, surgical treatment of anal fistula, and surgical treatment of rectal prolapse. From 2008 to 2014 he was founding partner and director of CECRA, a private clinic specialized in the exclusive care of patients with colon and rectal diseases, anorectal manometry, ultrasonography, colonoscopy, and pelvic floor rehabilitation. In 2015 he was invited as an advisor for the project "A Prospective European Post-Market Clinical Evaluation of the CuraSeal Percutaneous Intraluminal Closure System for Anorectal Fistulas" (Clinical trials NCT02456324) at Hospital Virgen del Rocio in Seville, Spain. During 2016 he was Director of Clinical Projects for Curaseal Inc, in California, United States. He has worked as a proctorship supervisor for Medtronic since 2019 advising on and implanting sacral neuromodulators. Dr. Villanueva is a founding member of the Grupo Academico y de Investigacion de Crohn y CUCI de Mexico. He has been called upon on multiple occasions by CENETEC of the Secretaria de Salud of the Federal Government, to write the Clinical Practice Guidelines for colorectal diseases. From 2017 to 2019 he was named the expert responsible for pelvic floor by the Colegio Mexicano de Especialistas en Coloproctologia; he is currently coordinator of the college's scientific committee. In 2017 he was honored as Chairman of Colorectal Surgery to organize the 3rd Congress of the Asociacion Latinoamericana de Piso Pelvico (ALAPP) held in Mexico City in March 2018. He has worked as a Spanish translation editor for the journal Diseases of Colon and Rectum since 2019. He is currently the Editor in Chief of the Revista Mexicana de Cirugia Colorrectal.
