Parapharyngeal Space Abscess

A parapharyngeal space abscess is a collection of pus in a deep compartment of the neck, located next to the pharynx and jaw, which usually appears as a complication of a dental, tonsillar, or throat infection.

Frequent symptoms: Intense neck and throat pain, difficulty or pain when opening the mouth, fever, visible swelling on one side of the neck, and, at times, trouble swallowing or breathing. The general malaise tends to worsen rapidly.

When to see a doctor? It is a situation that requires prompt attention: if there is high fever, neck swelling that is growing, or difficulty breathing, the evaluation should not be postponed even a few hours.

Which specialist treats it? It is addressed by the maxillofacial surgeon and the dentist, and in acute cases also by the emergency physician. In the face of these signs, the most prudent thing is to seek medical review without delay.
