Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is a collection of pus produced by a bacterial infection, which can form at the root of the tooth or in the surrounding gum. It is usually accompanied by pain and requires timely attention.

Frequent symptoms: intense, throbbing pain, inflammation of the area, sensitivity to heat or cold, bad taste in the mouth, and, at times, fever or facial swelling.

When to see a doctor? Intense dental pain, swelling that is growing, or fever are signs to seek care without delay, as the infection can spread if not treated.

Who treats it? The dentist evaluates the origin of the infection, and the endodontics specialist intervenes when the root of the tooth is compromised; the maxillofacial surgeon takes part in more complex cases. In the face of severe dental pain accompanied by swelling, the most prudent thing is to go for a professional evaluation as soon as possible.
