Harvest Mites

Harvest mites, popularly called chiggers or red bugs, are tiny arachnids whose larvae can attach to the skin when in grasslands or vegetation, causing a bothersome skin reaction.

Common symptoms: Very itchy red welts, especially in areas where clothing is snug, such as the waist or ankles, that appear a few hours after contact with the field or grass.

Common causes: Contact with areas of tall grass or crops where these larvae live, which detach after a few hours leaving the characteristic irritation and itching.

Who to see? The dermatologist evaluates the skin lesions and guides the care of the area, while the allergist steps in when there are intense or repeated reactions. If the itching is persistent, the skin becomes very irritated, or the welts become infected, it is advisable to show them to a professional for an appropriate evaluation.
