Renal Tubular Acidosis Type II

Type II renal tubular acidosis is a disorder in which the kidneys do not properly reabsorb bicarbonate in a specific part of the renal tubules, which alters the body's acid-base balance.

How it may present: In children it is usually associated with slow growth, muscle weakness, or abnormalities in laboratory studies; the symptoms may be subtle.

Common causes: It may be of hereditary origin or appear in association with other conditions that affect the function of the renal tubules.

Who treats it? The nephrologist, and in the pediatric population the pediatric nephrologist together with the pediatrician, are the ones indicated to evaluate it; the urologist may be involved in aspects related to the urinary tract. In the face of signs of growth delay or abnormal studies, seeking specialized evaluation is what is recommended.
