Canker Sores

Canker sores are usually treated in a medical visit when they are recurrent or very bothersome; depending on the case, the dermatologist, the general practitioner, or, when infection is suspected, the infectious disease specialist may provide guidance. Canker sores are small ulcers or lesions that appear inside the mouth, on the gums, the tongue, or the inner cheeks.

Frequent symptoms: rounded, light-colored lesions with a reddened border, pain when eating, speaking, or brushing, and sometimes a burning sensation before they appear.

Common causes: they are related to stress, minor injuries in the mouth, certain foods, hormonal changes, or factors specific to each person.

When to see a doctor? If they are very frequent, very large, or slow to heal, a professional assessment helps rule out other causes.
