Enlarged Adenoids

Enlarged adenoids occur when the lymphatic tissue located at the back of the nose, behind the palate, increases in size. It is more common in childhood, since the adenoids tend to shrink over the years.

Frequent symptoms: breathing through the mouth, snoring, persistent nasal congestion, a nasal voice, and, in some cases, repeated ear infections or restless sleep.

Common causes: it is usually associated with frequent respiratory infections or allergic processes that keep the tissue inflamed.

Which specialist treats it? The otolaryngologist is the one who assesses the adenoids and guides follow-up; in children, the pediatrician usually takes part in the initial evaluation. If you notice constant mouth breathing or snoring in your child, it is advisable to discuss it with one of these professionals for an appropriate review.
