Anthrax
Cutaneous anthrax, also known as carbuncle, is a rare infection caused by a bacterium that can affect the skin and, in certain cases, other organs. It should not be confused with the so-called common dermatological carbuncle arising from infected follicles.
Common causes: It is generally associated with contact with contaminated animals or animal products, as well as occupational exposure in livestock farming or hide processing.
Common symptoms: In its cutaneous form a skin lesion may appear that evolves and is accompanied by swelling of the area; other forms can include fever and a general feeling of being unwell.
Who to see? The one who guides the evaluation is the infectious disease specialist, along with the internist for general management. With a suspicious skin lesion after contact with animals, the sensible thing is to seek timely medical guidance.
