Choanal Atresia

Choanal atresia is a malformation present from birth in which the back part of the nasal passages, called the choanae, is blocked by tissue or bone, which hinders the normal flow of air between the nose and the throat.

Common symptoms: in newborns, difficulty breathing through the nose may be noticed, especially while feeding, along with persistent nasal discharge affecting one or both sides.

When to seek care? When a baby has difficulty breathing through the nose, tires while eating, or changes color while nursing, an assessment without delay is advisable.

Which specialists treat it? The otolaryngologist evaluates the nasal airway and, together with the pediatric surgeon, defines the management, while the pediatrician oversees the general follow-up. In the case of these signs in a baby, the wisest thing is to seek professional guidance as soon as possible.
