Typical Absence Seizures

Typical absence seizures are a type of epileptic seizure characterized by brief episodes of disconnection from the surroundings, in which the person, almost always a child, appears to stare blankly for a few seconds without responding.

How they manifest: sudden interruption of activity, a blank stare, and, at times, blinking or small movements; when they end, the person resumes what they were doing without remembering the episode.

When is it advisable to check? When these lapses recur, are confused with distraction, or affect learning and school performance.

Who treats it? The neurologist, the pediatric neurologist, or the pediatrician are the appropriate professionals to study these episodes. In the case of suspected frequent absence seizures in a child, it is worth scheduling an evaluation that allows understanding what is happening and how to support them.
