Prerenal Azotemia

Prerenal azotemia is the buildup of nitrogenous waste products in the blood, such as urea, due to a decrease in the blood flow that reaches the kidneys. The kidneys work, but they do not receive enough blood to filter properly.

Common causes: dehydration, severe vomiting or diarrhea, significant bleeding, or situations that reduce the supply of fluid and blood to the kidney.

Possible signs: decreased amount of urine, marked thirst, dizziness, weakness and, in children, signs of dehydration such as crying without tears or a dry mouth.

Which specialist treats it? The nephrologist, and in children the pediatric nephrologist, evaluates kidney function and identifies the underlying cause, since correcting it in time usually restores kidney function. When there are signs of significant dehydration or noticeable changes in urine, an evaluation with these professionals is key.
