Oral Thrush

Oral candidiasis, popularly known as thrush, is an infection of the mouth caused by a fungus of the Candida type, which normally lives in the body but under certain conditions multiplies more than usual.

What does it look like? It usually appears as whitish plaques or patches on the tongue, the gums, or the inside of the cheeks, which may be accompanied by discomfort, burning, or changes in taste.

Who does it affect? It is common in babies and can also occur in adults, especially when defenses are lowered or after certain treatments.

Which specialist treats it? The general practitioner and the pediatrician assess this condition, and the otolaryngologist or the infectious disease specialist take part in specific cases. If persistent white plaques appear in the mouth, the advisable thing is to consult about it to receive the right guidance.
