Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Oral squamous cell carcinoma is a type of malignant tumor that originates in the flat cells that line the inside of the mouth, such as the lips, gums, tongue, floor of the mouth, or palate.

Warning signs: It usually presents as a sore or ulcer in the mouth that does not close, a persistent white or red patch, a swelling, pain, or difficulty chewing or swallowing.

Associated factors: The use of tobacco and alcohol, as well as certain viral infections and poor oral hygiene, are related to its appearance.

Whom to consult? Any oral lesion that does not heal within a couple of weeks warrants a checkup. The evaluation usually falls to the maxillofacial surgeon, and when a tumor process is confirmed the oncologist is also involved. Detecting a change in time and discussing it with a professional makes a difference in follow-up.
