Primary Liver Cell Carcinoma

Primary carcinoma of the liver cells, also called hepatocellular carcinoma, is a type of cancer that originates in the liver's own cells. It usually appears in livers with prior damage, such as that associated with chronic inflammation or scarring of the organ.

Factors that may be associated: Long-standing liver diseases, certain infections of the liver, and other conditions that affect this organ chronically.

Possible signs: Discomfort or a feeling of heaviness on the right side of the abdomen, weight loss, fatigue, or yellowish coloring of the skin and eyes in advanced stages.

Who studies it? The gastroenterologist and the oncologist assess this condition, and the general surgeon takes part when an intervention is considered. With persistent symptoms, or if you live with a liver disease, the prudent thing is to keep up follow-up with a professional.
