Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a serious disorder in which the blood's clotting mechanism is activated excessively and uncontrollably throughout the body. This consumes the factors that stop bleeding and, paradoxically, can cause both clot formation and bleeding.

How it can present: Bleeding at several sites, bruising, or signs resulting from clot formation, always accompanying an underlying condition.
