Necrotizing Colitis

Necrotizing colitis, also referred to as necrotizing enterocolitis, is a serious intestinal condition in which part of the intestinal tissue becomes inflamed and may be damaged. It occurs most frequently in newborns, especially premature ones, although there are forms that affect other ages.

Warning signs: It may present with abdominal distension, feeding intolerance, vomiting, and signs of significant distress.

Common causes: It is usually related to a combination of factors, such as intestinal immaturity, alterations in the intestine's blood flow, and the presence of microorganisms.

The general surgeon and the gastroenterologist are key references in its evaluation; the proctologist may intervene depending on the affected area, and the general practitioner provides initial guidance.
