Costochondritis
Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that joins the ribs to the sternum, the bone in the center of the chest. It is a common cause of pain in the chest wall and, although it can be bothersome, it is usually a benign problem.
How it feels: the pain is located in the front of the chest, may increase when breathing deeply, coughing, or pressing on the area, and is sometimes confused with other chest complaints.
What can trigger it: physical strain, blows to the chest, or bouts of intense coughing are among the factors associated with it.
When and with whom to seek care? The internist can assess this type of chest-wall pain and help distinguish it from other causes. Since chest pain deserves attention, when discomfort doesn't ease or leaves you uncertain, the prudent thing is to seek a medical evaluation.
