Thyroid Storm

Hyperthyroid crisis, also called thyroid storm, is a rare and serious situation in which a very marked excess of thyroid hormones intensely disrupts the body's functioning.

Warning signs: There may be high fever, a very fast heart rate, agitation, profuse sweating, tremors, and, in some cases, confusion.

When is it an emergency? Because of how quickly it develops, when these symptoms appear, especially in people with known thyroid problems, it's advisable to seek emergency care right away.

Which specialist treats it? In the acute phase, the emergency physician steps in, while the endocrinologist—including the pediatric endocrinologist—follows up on the underlying thyroid disorder. Recognizing these signs and going to an emergency service without delay is the safest decision.
