G6PD Deficiency

G6PD deficiency (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) is a hereditary disorder in which red blood cells lack an enzyme that protects them from oxidative stress. This can cause them to be destroyed faster than normal when exposed to certain triggers.

What can trigger it? Some infections, the consumption of fava beans, and certain medications can precipitate the breakdown of red blood cells in people who live with this condition, so knowing the triggers is an important part of care.

Frequent symptoms: During an episode, paleness, fatigue, rapid heartbeat, yellowish coloration of the skin or eyes, and dark urine may appear.

Which specialist treats it? The hematologist and, in children, the pediatric hematologist and the pediatrician are the ones who guide its diagnosis and follow-up. If there is a family history or episodes of paleness and dark urine, it is advisable to discuss it with one of these professionals to confirm it with a blood test.
