Median Nerve Dysfunction

When the median nerve — responsible for much of the sensation and movement of the hand — stops working properly, discomfort in the wrist and fingers usually appears. This condition is known as median nerve dysfunction.

Common symptoms: Tingling, burning, or numbness in the thumb, index, and middle finger, along with weakness in making a pinching motion. The discomfort may worsen at night.

Common causes: It is frequently related to compression at the wrist, repetitive movements, trauma, or inflammation of the nearby tissues.

When should you see a doctor? If the loss of sensation or strength becomes constant, it is advisable to consult a neurologist and, if appropriate, a hand surgery or orthopedics specialist, for a careful evaluation to guide proper management.
