Developmental dysplasia of the hip is a condition in which the hip joint does not form or fit together correctly, present from birth or in the baby's first months of life.

How is it detected? It may be noticed as a difference in the length or movement of the legs, a click when moving them, or asymmetric folds; this is why early checkups are so helpful.

Why does it matter? Detecting it in time during infancy favors better development of the joint throughout growth.

Which specialist treats it? The pediatrician performs the initial evaluation and the orthopedist, especially the pediatric orthopedist, follows up on the child's hip. If you have concerns about your baby's hip, mentioning it during the pediatric visit allows for a timely evaluation.
