Breastfeeding Pain

In the case of discomfort during breastfeeding, the family physician and the general practitioner can offer initial guidance, and the gynecologist can assess breast-related causes. Pain while breastfeeding is a common discomfort in the early stages of breastfeeding and, although frequent, should not be normalized when it is severe or persistent.

Common causes: A poor position or latch of the baby, sensitive or cracked skin on the nipple, or inflammation of the breast tissue.

When to seek help? It is advisable to consult if the pain is strong, if cracks, redness, or fever appear, or if the discomfort makes it difficult to continue breastfeeding.

Resolving these discomforts in time usually makes for more comfortable breastfeeding; for this reason, talking with a health professional when they appear is a good decision.
