Culture-Negative Endocarditis

Culture-negative endocarditis is an inflammation of the inner lining of the heart and its valves (the endocardium) in which, despite clear signs of infection, standard blood cultures fail to identify the responsible microorganism, which makes it harder to study and monitor.

How it can show up: It is usually accompanied by prolonged fever, fatigue, sweating, a general feeling of being unwell, and at times heart murmurs or symptoms related to how the heart is working.

When should you seek care? With persistent fever without a clear cause, especially in people with known valve problems or a history of heart conditions, a timely evaluation is advisable.

The cardiologist, and for children the pediatric cardiologist, are the ones who evaluate this heart condition, coordinate the necessary tests, and monitor how it progresses.
