Chronic Granulomatous Disease

Chronic granulomatous disease is an inherited disorder of the immune system in which certain defense cells cannot properly eliminate some microorganisms. This makes the person more prone to recurrent infections.

Causes: It is of genetic origin; the cells in charge of fighting germs have a defect that reduces their protective ability.

Possible manifestations:

• Repeated infections in the skin, lungs or lymph nodes
• Formation of small inflammatory nodules called granulomas
• Fever or inflammation of unclear cause

Which specialist treats it? The immunologist and the allergist, together with the pediatrician in the case of children, are the ones who study and follow up on this condition. If there are frequent or unusual infections, it is advisable to raise it at a visit for a detailed evaluation.
