Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is most often treated by the pediatrician, since it is a common viral infection in childhood, though it can also occur in adults. An infectious disease specialist may get involved in cases that require it.

What is it? An infection caused by a virus that produces sores on the mouth, hands, and feet, usually mild and self-limiting.

Common symptoms:

• Small sores or blisters in the mouth
• Rashes or blisters on the palms and soles
• Fever and reduced appetite

When to seek care? If there is persistent fever, difficulty drinking fluids, or signs of dehydration, it is a good idea to have a doctor evaluate the patient and give guidance on care.
