Polycystic Kidney Disease

Polycystic kidney disease is a disorder, in many cases hereditary, in which numerous fluid-filled cysts form in the kidneys. Over time, these cysts can cause the kidneys to enlarge and gradually compromise their function.

How it can show up: Pain in the back or flank, high blood pressure, blood in the urine, repeated urinary tract infections, stones, or a feeling of abdominal heaviness; in its early stages it may cause no symptoms for years.

When is it a good idea to get checked? If there is a family history of the disease or high blood pressure of unclear origin at an early age, an evaluation is worthwhile.
