Gestational Trophoblastic Disease

Gestational trophoblastic disease is evaluated by the gynecologist, as it groups together a set of disorders that originate in the tissue that would normally give rise to the placenta during pregnancy.

What it is: Instead of normal development, this tissue grows abnormally, which can be detected in relation to a current or recent pregnancy.

Common symptoms: Vaginal bleeding, uterine growth beyond what is expected, or nausea more intense than usual.

When to seek care? It is advisable to seek care in the face of bleeding during pregnancy or unusual symptoms. The gynecologist performs the initial evaluation and the gynecologic oncologist steps in for cases that require it; therefore, in the face of any warning sign during pregnancy, the most advisable thing is a timely evaluation.
