Oral Candidiasis

Candidal stomatitis, also known as oral candidiasis or thrush, is an infection of the lining of the mouth caused by the fungus Candida. It is recognized by the appearance of whitish plaques on the tongue, gums, or inside of the cheeks.

Frequent symptoms: White patches that may leave reddened areas when they come off, burning, discomfort when eating, and, at times, altered taste.

Common causes: It is usually favored by the use of dentures, dry mouth, certain medications, or conditions that affect the body's defenses.

Which specialist treats it? The dentist and the maxillofacial surgeon assess oral health, while the infectious disease specialist or general practitioner step in when there are general factors involved; in children the pediatric dentist takes part. If the discomfort persists, the most prudent course is to have it reviewed by an oral health professional.
