Bile Duct Exploration

Exploration of the bile ducts is a medical procedure aimed at examining the ducts that carry bile from the liver and gallbladder toward the intestine, in order to identify obstructions or other abnormalities.

What is it done for? It is usually indicated when stones, narrowings, or lesions that hinder the normal flow of bile are suspected.

Signs that may prompt it: Yellowish coloring of the skin or eyes, pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, or abnormalities detected in previous studies.

Which specialist performs it? The general surgeon is the one who usually carries out or coordinates this type of exploration, and in select cases the proctologist or the oncologist may take part depending on the finding. The indication should always be assessed individually with a professional.
