Ohio River Valley Fever (Histoplasmosis)

Ohio River Valley fever corresponds to histoplasmosis, an infection caused by a fungus found in soils enriched with bird or bat droppings and that reaches the body upon inhaling its spores. It receives that name for the regions where it is common.

How it can present: In many people it runs a mild or almost unnoticed course; in others it can cause respiratory complaints, fever, cough and tiredness, since it mainly affects the lungs.

Possible signs on the skin: In some cases skin lesions can appear, which is why it is also evaluated from dermatology.

Who to see? The internist evaluates the general and respiratory condition, while the dermatologist reviews the skin manifestations when they exist. If you have respiratory symptoms after being exposed to dust from caves or henhouses, the prudent thing is to have a professional evaluate it.
