Dental or Gingival Fistula

A dental or gum fistula is a small tunnel that forms to drain pus from an infection originating in the tooth or the tissues surrounding it, and it usually looks like a bump or "pimple" on the gum.

Common signs: A bump that comes and goes, discharge of foul-tasting fluid, sensitivity or pain in the area, and sometimes swelling.

Why you shouldn't ignore it: It indicates an active infection that does not resolve on its own and requires care to keep it from getting worse.

Who to see? The dentist is the first point of contact; depending on the source, an endodontist, a periodontist, or a maxillofacial surgeon may be involved. When there is a persistent bump on the gum, it's advisable to have it checked as soon as possible by a dental professional.
