Gastroschisis
Gastroschisis is a congenital defect of the abdominal wall in which the intestine (and sometimes other organs) develops outside the baby's abdomen, through an opening located next to the navel.
When is it detected? It is often identified before birth during routine prenatal studies, which makes it possible to plan the delivery and the care of the newborn.
Common symptoms: At birth, the organs are exposed without a membrane covering them, which requires immediate specialized care.
Which specialist treats it? The follow-up involves the gynecologist during pregnancy, and after birth the neonatologist, the pediatric surgeon, and the pediatrician. If during a prenatal check-up there are concerns about the baby's abdominal development, the most sensible thing is to discuss it with the medical team managing the pregnancy.
