GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease, a disorder in which the contents of the stomach repeatedly flow back into the esophagus and cause discomfort. The acid irritates the lining and produces symptoms that can become chronic.

Common symptoms: burning in the chest or heartburn, regurgitation, a bitter taste in the mouth and, at times, coughing or throat clearing.

Contributing factors: large or fatty meals, being overweight, lying down soon after eating, and certain habits.
