Giardiasis

Giardiasis is an infection of the intestine caused by a microscopic parasite that affects the digestive tract and can cause prolonged intestinal discomfort.

Common symptoms: It usually presents with diarrhea, gas, abdominal bloating, nausea and, in some cases, weight loss or general malaise.

Common causes: It is acquired by drinking or eating contaminated water or food, or through contact with surfaces and hands without proper hygiene.

When to see a doctor? It is advisable to consult if the diarrhea persists, there is dehydration, or the symptoms do not improve. The infectious disease specialist and the general practitioner can guide the workup for giardiasis, and in childhood the pediatrician; a timely evaluation makes it easier to identify the source of the discomfort.
