Hydatidosis

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by the larvae of a worm, which form fluid-filled cysts in organs such as the liver or the lungs; it usually grows slowly over years.

How it is acquired: it is related to contact with infected dogs and livestock, or with the consumption of food or water contaminated with the parasite's eggs.

How it presents: for a long time it may cause no symptoms; as the cysts grow, they can cause abdominal pain, discomfort in the side, or respiratory symptoms depending on the affected organ.
