Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis

Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a rare disorder in which certain cells of the immune system, called histiocytes, accumulate abnormally in different tissues of the body, such as bones, skin, or lungs.

Which specialist treats it? Because of its nature and its possible involvement in several organs, it usually requires a team in which the hematologist, the oncologist and, in childhood, the pediatric hematologist, the pediatric oncologist, and the pediatrician take part; when there is lung involvement, the pulmonologist also intervenes.

Possible manifestations: it may present with skin lesions, bone pain or inflammation, respiratory problems, or general symptoms, and it varies greatly from one person to another.

When to seek care? In the presence of persistent signs without a clear explanation, it is worth seeking a medical evaluation that defines the appropriate study.
