Acute Ear Infection

An acute ear infection, also called acute otitis, is an inflammation that frequently affects the middle ear and is usually accompanied by pain. It is very common in childhood, although it can also appear in adults.

Common symptoms: ear pain, a sensation of pressure, decreased hearing, fever and, in young children, irritability or crying when the area is touched.

Common causes: it usually appears after a cold or respiratory infection, when fluid builds up behind the eardrum.

Which specialist treats it? The otolaryngologist examines the ear thoroughly, while the pediatrician and the general practitioner perform the initial evaluation. If the pain is intense, there is fever, or fluid drainage from the ear appears, it is advisable to see a professional soon.
