Acute Middle Ear Infection

When ear pain accompanied by discomfort appears, especially in childhood, it may be an acute middle ear infection, an inflammation of the area located behind the eardrum, where fluid usually builds up.

What is usually noticed: ear pain, a sensation of pressure, sometimes fever and, in the youngest, irritability or difficulty sleeping.

Why it happens: it frequently arises after a respiratory illness, when the passage that connects the ear to the throat does not drain well and promotes inflammation.

Who evaluates it? Examining the ear is the job of the otolaryngologist, who can inspect the eardrum in detail. If the pain is intense or does not improve, seeking a professional evaluation is the most sensible thing to do.
