Sublingual Space Infection

The maxillofacial surgeon and the dentist, along with the endodontics specialist, are the ones who usually treat an infection of the sublingual space, a collection of pus in the tissue located beneath the tongue, in the floor of the mouth. It is frequently related to dental infections that spread to that region.

Common symptoms: pain and swelling beneath the tongue, difficulty swallowing or moving the tongue, redness, and, at times, fever.

When to seek care immediately? If the swelling grows rapidly or difficulty breathing or swallowing appears, urgent care is required.

Who evaluates it: in addition to the maxillofacial surgeon and the dentist, the infectious disease specialist may be involved depending on how it progresses. When there is discomfort in the floor of the mouth accompanied by swelling, seeking professional evaluation as soon as possible is the safest choice.
