Postpartum pituitary insufficiency is a decrease in the production of hormones from the pituitary gland that can occur after a complicated delivery, especially when there was significant blood loss that affected the blood supply to that gland.

What is it? The pituitary regulates several of the body's hormones; when its function decreases, various hormonal processes can be altered, including milk production and the balance of other glands.

Common symptoms: difficulty with or absence of milk production, persistent fatigue, absence of menstruation, feeling cold, and intolerance to exertion.

Which specialist treats it? The gynecologist is involved in the care of the postpartum period, and the dermatologist may step in for changes in skin and hair associated with hormonal disorders. If these symptoms appear after a delivery, it is advisable to raise it at a visit for a careful evaluation.
