Chronic obstructive kidney failure is the decline in kidney function that appears when urine flow is persistently blocked, for example by stones, narrowings, or growths that prevent the urinary tract from emptying normally.

Common symptoms: it may show up as changes in the amount of urine, swelling in the legs or face, fatigue, lower back pain, or high blood pressure. In its early stages it often goes unnoticed.

Common causes: prolonged obstructions in the ureters, bladder, or urethra, as well as certain malformations of the urinary tract.

Which specialist treats it? The evaluation usually falls to the nephrologist, with support from the internist or general practitioner, and in children to the pediatric nephrologist; nutritional guidance may also be part of the follow-up.
