Localized Lymphadenopathy

Localized lymphadenopathy is the enlargement of lymph nodes in a single region of the body, such as the neck, the armpits, or the groin. It usually reflects a response of the body in that area.

Common causes: nearby infections, inflammatory processes and, less often, other conditions that require a workup.

Common symptoms: one or more palpable lumps, which may or may not be tender, sometimes accompanied by discomfort in the affected area.

Which specialist treats it? The general practitioner is usually the first point of contact; depending on the location and characteristics, the otolaryngologist, the general surgeon, or the oncologist may get involved. If you notice a node that enlarges, persists for several weeks, or is accompanied by other symptoms, the prudent thing is to seek a professional evaluation.
