Infectious Myringitis

Infectious myringitis is inflammation of the eardrum, the thin membrane that separates the external ear canal from the middle ear, caused by infectious agents. This irritation can affect hearing and cause discomfort in the ear area.

Common symptoms: It usually presents with ear pain, a plugged-ear sensation and, at times, discharge of fluid or a temporary decrease in hearing.

Common causes: It is often associated with respiratory tract infections or with infections of the ear itself, which spread the inflammation to the eardrum.

When to see a doctor? If ear pain persists, is accompanied by fever, or you notice changes in hearing, it is worth having it checked. The general practitioner can guide the first evaluation, while the otolaryngologist is the specialist suited to examine the eardrum in detail and follow up on infectious myringitis.
